The Montreal Estate has been in existence for over 250 years.
The rural business includes arable farming, forestry, conservation, livestock production, conference and events facilities, renewable energy and residential properties.
Purchased in 2012 by Mr and Mrs Green, the family have made significant improvements, enhancing the aesthetics, efficiency, and sustainability of the Estate.
Improvements include conversion of the old Estate Hub, which was no longer fit for purpose, into 11,000ft of office facilities at Salter’s Heath, available for business to rent: www.saltersheath.com
The Estate Office and main operations are now based at Penn Farm, where repurposed dairy farm buildings have been converted into new modern facilities, including state of the art offices and conference rooms, staff welfare facilities and 15,8332ft of modern farm machinery buildings.
There has also been significant investment in forestry, machinery and ways of working, to ensure the Estate is operating both efficiently, sustainably and safely.
The Montreal Estate strives to continuously improve its operations to support its residents and to meet social, economic, and environmental targets for the future.
One of the most significant events for the Estate in the last 50 years was the Great Storm in 1987 when the Estate lost 4 million trees in one night.
Local Community
The Estate plays a large role in the local community and has supported various schemes around the local villages. These include participating in upgrades to power lines, the installation of a new cell phone mast, allowing fibre optic cables and boxes over our land in addition to being neighbourly where we can such as supporting village events.
The building of 8km of farm tracks has improved efficiency for farm vehicles and reduced the amount of farm traffic using the narrow lanes around the Estate.
Wider Community
Agricultural Education
We are proud to support university agricultural degree courses by providing opportunities for students in their placement years.
Sussex Cattle Society
In September 2023 we hosted the Whole Society Annual General Meeting of breeders from far and wide across the UK. Over 70 people attended, and awards were received by many, including Montreal Estate.
Royal Forestry Society
We were incredibly honoured to have hosted the 2023 Whole Society Annual General Meeting. It was Kent’s turn as a county, to host the AGM, which included visiting 4 woodlands over a 4-day period.
The Team
We are very proud of our team of 12 employees who represent the Estate so well within the area. They are all highly skilled and yet always keen to continue with their professional development.
Our eldest employee has worked and lived on the Estate for over 50 years, with a second employee having served for over 25 years. Our younger employees are often placement students, who already have relevant work experience and are reading Agriculture at universities including Reading and Harper Adams.
Everyone takes great pride in the good maintenance of machinery, which is important to ensure that we all stay safe. Crop walking is undertaken by all to ensure crop yields are maximised through good agronomy. And all the livestock are inspected daily, which is helped by the fact that they have been carefully located where they can be easily viewed.
